The Universe of Hans Zimmer
July 25, 29

Our last day here and our first day There. What will it be like? Who will meet us There? What will we talk about? Alexander Tsypkin and Konstantin Khabensky asked themselves these questions—and that’s how the play *Intuition* came to be. Thirteen monologues from people who have opened their eyes There. Thirteen destinies. Thirteen regrets about what could have been fixed on the last day. Angels are listening to them. The audience is listening to them. Why? We’ll find out at the end of the play.

Sovremennik
Sylphide
July 25, 26

Italian choreographer Filippo Taglioni created the title role for his daughter, Maria. Awkward, stooped, and unattractive, she bore no resemblance to the heroines of the “Anacreontic” ballets that dominated the scene at the time, which demanded that ballerinas possess the forms and grace of ancient statues. But her intelligent, caring, and strict father honed her technique to such a degree that she could balance on her toes for minutes at a time without her partner’s support, and she leaped so high, so lightly, and so silently that she created the illusion of floating. And the renowned tenor Adolf Nouri, who was in love with the ballerina, composed a story about an ideal being who perishes at the touch of rough hands.

The Bolshoi Theater. The New Stage

Crazy Money
July 18

There’s no need to discuss the play’s relevance—money, like the desire for a life of luxury, has always been one of the most powerful motivators. Most of the play’s characters are members of Moscow’s impoverished nobility: they still ride in carriages, drink champagne, and employ servants, but all of this is on credit. Meanwhile, the emerging bourgeoisie, on the contrary, are thinking about “how not to go over budget.” They all live in an era of sudden ruin and rise, when unexpected sources of income spring up, and when everything—even beauty—is for sale.

Vladimir Mayakovsky Theater. Main and Small Stages

Pygmalion
July 5, 17

How did the “devilish old woman” nearly derail the success of Pygmalion, one of Bernard Shaw’s most famous plays? It’s simple: the coarse language of the main character—the feisty flower girl Eliza Doolittle—seriously angered the critics in attendance at the London premiere. In post-Victorian England, expressions like “Not bloody likely!” could be shocking.

Contemporary
Chukovsky
July 6, 7

“Chukovsky” is a journey into a paradoxical fairy tale that becomes reality. Here, translator Nikolai Korneychukov becomes the storyteller Korney Chukovsky, the animals solve the problems of the “Limpopo” amateur theater group, and in magical dreams—just as in life—love always triumphs.

The 1920s were the decade when all of Chukovsky’s major fairy tales were written: “The Barmaleys,” “Fedor’s Sorrow,” “The Giant Cockroach,” “The Fly-Tsokotukha,” “Moidoodyr,” “Aibolit,” “The Telephone,” and “The Stolen Sun.” The play “Chukovsky” is being staged to mark their centennial.

The Yermolova Theater
Why me?
July 17, 25

A confession with a touch of eccentricity. A unique project by Irina Gorbacheva, based on real events from her life. Every moment in time brings its own questions: “Who is to blame?”, “What should I do?”, “Why me?”. They trigger memories and events that happen to us and shape us throughout different stages of life. Irina Gorbacheva asks herself these questions to understand where she stands now, what she needs to let go of, and what she must accept within herself once and for all—how she can be her true self as an artist, a daughter, and a woman.

The Palace on the Yauza
An Extraordinary Concert
July 5 and 12

“The Extraordinary Concert” is a comedic puppet revue in which the puppets parody performers from a wide variety of genres: singers, dancers, musicians, circus trainers, and magicians. “The Extraordinary Concert” is hosted by the puppet emcee, Eduard Aplombov. He has a knack for instantly making the audience smile. He loves thunderous applause. A unique polyglot: he fires off jokes and puns without a moment’s hesitation in twenty-four languages, including Farsi and Hindi. Inimitable and irresistible! Don’t just take his word for it!

The Obraztsov Puppet Theater
Ognivo
July 26

Is it possible to catch luck by the tail? And not just one, but three dog tails at once? The soldier in Andersen’s fairy tale managed to do just that. To find a flint, marry a princess, and become king, despite all the hardships—that truly takes some serious luck. And as we all know, luck doesn’t come to just anyone. As is customary, a fairy tale must have a moral. Here, every young audience member will discover it for themselves. But, of course, not without the help of the main characters, who guide us into this fascinating world full of wonderful surprises and strange yet charming creatures, where the most important thing turns out to be the ability to be honest: with the world, with others, and with oneself.
