July 25, 26Italian choreographer Filippo Taglioni created the title role for his daughter, Maria. Awkward, stooped, and unattractive, she bore no resemblance to the heroines of the “Anacreontic” ballets that dominated the scene at the time, which demanded that ballerinas possess the forms and grace of ancient statues. But her intelligent, caring, and strict father honed her technique to such a degree that she could balance on her toes for minutes at a time without her partner’s support, and she leaped so high, so lightly, and so silently that she created the illusion of floating. And the renowned tenor Adolf Nouri, who was in love with the ballerina, composed a story about an ideal being who perishes at the touch of rough hands.
